Crete

Planning a trip to the island of Crete Greece? We got you covered! This is the page to find Crete travel tips, guides, and read all about our own experiences.

Greece is one of our favorite countries in the world, and we’ve now been to over 20 different islands. Still, traveling around the largest island in the country was truly impressive!

Our first visit to Crete was back in 2018. After taking the bus for the first few days, we decided to rent a car to fully explore it.

Our 10 day itinerary took us to beautiful beaches, small mountain villages, and even the famous hippie caves of Matala. We tasted so much delicious food along the way, from lamb to dakos, and gyros at the local tavern.

One of our favorite memories was the drive we made to the pink sand beach! Elafonisi is a special place that every traveler should see for themselves. To avoid the crowds, we spent the night at a local hotel and woke up there for sunrise.

Like all of Greece, Crete Island has so much incredible history to discover. On our recent visit, we were so excited to tour Knossos Palace. We highly recommend going with a guide here, and combining it with a trip to the historical museum of Heraklion.

Crete has an international airport that plays host to flights from all over Europe. We’ve also taken a Celestyal Cruise that made a stop here before continuing to other fun islands.

Take a spin through all our Crete guides for tips from our numerous visits. We’re already planning a trip back to Crete island this year, so stay tuned!

Crete Greece Travel Tips

Money: The Euro is used in Crete and throughout Greece.

Location: Crete is located in the southern part of the Aegean Sea. There are many ferry routes connecting it to other islands, and even the capital city of Athens.

Language: Greek is the official language on Crete.

Seasons: The most popular time to visit is during the warm summer months. This is when you can take advantage of the stunning beaches and outdoor activities.

One of our best Crete travel tips is to see the island during shoulder season before or after July and August. The weather will still be pleasant, and people swim well into November!

What to Eat & Drink: Greek food is so diverse and delicious. On Crete, you’ll find that they have their own cuisine with unique dishes that you can only find here.

They feature a variety of seafood and hearty meat dishes, with an abundance of sweet bakery treats as well. Be sure to try raki liquor along with beer and Cretan wine.
