Planning your first trip to Hawaii and need some cute outfit ideas to add to your packing list? Don’t worry! I’ve put together some of my favorite Hawaii outfits from my many visits to Maui. This includes what to pack, what to skip, and everything in between. These Hawaii vacation outfits are perfect for ladies making their first trip to the beautiful islands.
Planning Your Trip to Hawaii
It doesn’t really matter what islands you plan to travel to, all of these Hawaii outfit ideas flow between them all. As you’ll see though, this article will be very Maui-focused as it’s my favorite Hawaiian island! Here are a few general tips for your first trip that I’ve learned over the years.
☀️ Hawaii has both a wet and dry season. The dry months run from May to October, and the wet rainy months go from November to April. With that said, wet season often has less crowds and discounted prices. Just know you might get a quick tropical rain shower here and there!
🚗 Renting a car is the best way to get around, even if it’s just for a day or two! We picked ours up right from the Maui airport after our flight with Hawaiian Airlines. This is the company we used to get a great deal so we could have a vehicle to explore for the entire trip.
Make sure you have insurance through your credit card or the company you’re booking with. We got a small thorn stuck in our tire driving down to one beach, and we were so glad we were covered.
Afterwards, they told us this happens countless times a day with their customers. Here are some must know tips form our trip if you’re thinking about renting a car in Maui Hawaii.
⛵️ A Hawaii vacation wouldn’t be complete without jumping on a sailboat or catamaran. There are exciting tours to fit any budget and it will definitely be a highlight of your visit.
Get Your Guide is a great website to start your search for these type of activities. Stay tuned for the best Hawaii outfits for your boat trips and beach days later in this article!
🌴 Don’t try to hit ALL the islands at once. We had two weeks for our last trip to Maui and didn’t come close to seeing everything.
Many travelers make the mistake of trying to visit multiple islands on just a one week visit. We would keep it to two islands max if you have limited time for your Hawaiian holiday.
🏨 Some of the most iconic hotels are The Royal Hawaiian, Moana Surfrider, and Wailea Four Seasons Resort (where White Lotus was filmed). Obviously, these luxury stays can be very expensive, so you should book well in advance to lock in the best rates.
It’s also smart to travel during swing or rainy season if you’re really on a budget. Here are some helpful tips for where to stay in Maui with a breakdown of the entire island.
8 Best Hawaii Outfits to Pack For Your Vacation
1. Flowing Dresses
In my opinion, this should be the foundation of your Hawaii packing list! That might be dramatic, but there is something about a long, flowing maxi dress in Hawaii that just works. They look stunning, are easy to throw on, and will keep you comfortable in the hot weather.
Hawaii outfits are versatile because there really are no must-pack colors. This is very different than other places I’ve traveled to such as Santorini Greece and Lake Como where very specific colors fit more.
Don’t be afraid to pack more bright and bold colors for islands like Maui and Kauaʻi. Yet, if that’s not your style, then a white, yellow, or pale blue dress will look amazing. Most Hawaii outfit ideas will go well with the deep blue ocean, green palm trees, and golden sand.
2. Beach Ready Hawaii Outfits
Is it even possible to visit Hawaii without packing a bathing suit? How about multiple! Now, I will say this is the item that might get overpacked the most. On my last trip, I had two one pieces and 4 bikinis. Yes, complete overkill, but I wanted to have options.
Realistically, I probably only ended up wearing my favorite two on repeat. I guess it just depends on your own personal travel style.
Are you going to be mostly hanging at the pool and sun tanning… or are you the type of person to hop on a boat tour or jet-ski ride?
Well, that’s two completely different swimwear styles. These are just some things to think about when planning out your Hawaii vacation outfits.
Also, don’t forget your coverups and beach wraps. I have several short, flowing dresses that I throw on over my bathing-suit, which are just to go to the pool or down to the beach. That way, I feel comfortable walking around in public and could stop at a cafe along the way.
Besides having a towel with me, I always pack a very thin wrap that’s easy to throw on. I can tie it around my waist or throw it over my shoulders if need be.

3. Strolling on the Coastal Walks
The coastal walks are one of our favorite parts about visiting Hawaii! We’ll touch more on the challenging hikes soon, but know that there are nice pathways on the islands for all ages.
These walks are relatively flat, so you won’t necessarily need your workout clothing. Still, you’ll want to be able to go long distances in this Hawaii outfit and stay comfortable.
I typically liked a shorter dress or linen shorts and a nice top. You can save your long maxi dresses for dinner and sunset photos.
By now, you can tell that Maui is a destination we just can’t stay away from. Two of our favorite easy paths on the island are the Kapalua Coastal Trail and the Wailea Beach Walk. For a more adventurous coastal route, you can also check out the Hoapili Trail with wild goats!
4. Hawaii Outfits for Island Adventures
Some of my favorite days in Hawaii have been when we were out exploring the islands. For these trips, I would usually wear shorts and a nice but comfortable top. Nothing fancy really! Just more of a cotton shirt or tank top that I could stay active in.
I found one simple t-shirt before my last Hawaii trip with cute muted tropical pattern on it. At the time, I didn’t think much of it, but I ended up wearing it on all my adventure days.
This included exploring the national parks, shopping at the Maui farmers markets, or driving the famous Road to Hana! On these days, you’ll want a Hawaii outfit that’s good for jumping in and out of the car at all the viewpoints. Don’t wear anything too tight or something that you wouldn’t want to be on a longer drive after being out and about.

5. Epic Hikes & Viewpoints
While we’re on that topic, you shouldn’t go to Hawaii without doing at least one hike! There are some unreal trails that take you up into the mountains of every island.
The great thing about Hawaii is that there are all kinds of hikes for every skill level. Our go-to is AllTrails, which is a helpful website with real human reviews.
They range from incredible viewpoints looking out over the Pacific Ocean to jungle trails with massive waterfalls. For Maui hikes like the Pipiwai Trail and Waihee Ridge, you’ll want to wear your typical workout outfits.
Obviously, if you plan to do multiple long or difficult hikes, you should add several sets to your Hawaii packing list. This is especially important if you don’t have laundry at your hotel.

6. Cozy Morning & Resort Wear
There are a few things that kind of go without saying when planning your Hawaii outfits. Besides the normal pajamas for nighttime, I love having relaxing options that are easy and comfortable, but also acceptable in public.
This is more applicable if you are staying at a hotel. Bring a Hawaii vacation outfit or two specifically that look nice for just walking around the resort grounds.
Think something you can throw on without thinking and rush to breakfast if you slept in. Maybe you woke up extra early and want to grab a coffee to just stroll down to the beach.
The stars might be so amazing one night that you want to sit outside and have one last glass of wine. Basically, I mean an outfit that is 100% comfy, but won’t get strange stares by the hotel pool.
7. Hawaii Outfit Ideas For a Night Out
The majority of this Hawaii packing list is for daytime adventures, enjoying the beach, and hanging poolside. However, once you’re back in your room and getting ready for dinner, you’ll want some nicer Hawaii outfits to go out in.
There are so many great places to eat around the islands, from casual seaside lunch spots to high-end restaurants in the hills. This is when you can bust out some of the nicer options you added to your suitcase.
Again, it really comes down to your personal style. I typically pack at least one decent cocktail dress, or even maxi with a high-quality material. It also depends on what type of dinner or night you have planned.
Be sure to read about our favorite Maui food and drinks, from huli huli chicken to pineapple wine, and all kinds of tropical fruits.
8. One Warmer Layer
Now, I’m not going to tell you to pack a winter jacket or jeans with your Hawaii vacation outfits. Nope, not at all!
Nevertheless, I was generally surprised that at night (or very early morning) I found myself reaching for the thin, lightweight cream sweater that I bought. It especially came in handy when we drove up to the highest point on the island. Also, I had a long pair or linen loose pants that I ended up wearing more than once.
Hawaii is known for its amazing weather and heat, but almost everywhere indoors is air conditioned. It’s best to have at least one layer that you can throw on, or even a shawl if needed.

Essentials to Go With Your Hawaii Outfits
Hopefully, at this point, you have some fun Hawaii outfit ideas for your next trip! There are just a few more items that you’ll need to ensure the perfect island holiday.
Proper Shoes: If you plan to do one of the more intense hikes, bring hiking boots or good sneakers at minimum. This is not the time for street shoes or sandals.
We were taken aback by how many travelers we saw in flip flops on some of the trails. I’m sure most of them had to turn around because it was so unrealistic for the steeper sections.
These are my favorite casual shoes that I have worn around the world. Believe it or not, it’s actually a Hawaiian company! They have wonderful sandals as well if you need something stylish to go with your Hawaii outfits.
Purse & Bags: This can be your purse that you normally like to wear or travel with. I go for a single strap bag at airports and while out and about to keep all my important stuff on me.
For Hawaii, you’ll also want to think about a larger beach bag. There are tons (like this one) that fold up when packing.
Folding Backpack: I can’t remember any trip we’ve been on that we haven’t brought some sort of backpack or folding bag. Depending on what luggage you’re traveling with, this can even act as your carry-on bag.
You could buy a small, inexpensive folding bag (like this one), which is great for the outdoors or packing some towels to hit the beach.
Hats & Shades: The sun is STRONG in Hawaii. Personally, I find it annoying to pack hats in my luggage, but always wear them when I do. Try to bring a stylish one that fits with your dresses, beachwear, and cute Hawaii outfit ideas. Sunglasses are obviously a must for any tropical place, too!
