If you want the best view of Gdansk Poland, you’ll need to head to the top of the famous St Mary’s Church! Climbing the Bell Tower of St Mary’s Basilica is one of the main attractions in Gdansk and something everyone should experience. Here are some quick tips to know before you go.
History of St Mary’s Basilica Gdansk
St Mary’s Basilica is a Roman Catholic church located in the heart of Gdansk, Poland. Construction started on St. Mary’s Church way back in 1343, but it still retains its beauty almost 700 years later.
It is believed to be the largest brick church in the entire world, and fits an astounding 25,000 people inside! One of the most stunning features of this house of God is a giant bell tower that looks over the city.
What makes visiting this Gdansk church unique is you are actually able to climb to the top for a birds-eye view. If you’ve been to Krakow Poland, you may be familiar with the basilica in the main square that goes by the same name!
The Climb Up St Mary’s Church
While the view from the top of this Gdansk Poland church is spectacular, it is certainly not for the faint of heart! Climbing the bell tower of St Mary’s Basilica will take you up a winding set of steep stairs.
Honestly, it’s so tight there is barely enough room to pass by the people coming back down. There are approximately 405 steps to the top of the bell tower, which should take you about 15-20 minutes. Make sure to wear shoes and bring some Polish Zolty for the entrance fee.
Epic Views From St Mary’s Basilica
Once you make it to the top of the bell tower you will be rewarded with panoramic views of Gdansk. From here you can really see how special the architecture is of this glorious city. The colors seem to pop out at you as you look across the skyline, especially on a clear day.
The craziest thing I noticed from the top is how truly big St Mary’s Basilica is. It seems to stretch on forever underneath you and blends in with the rest of the city. Take your time to enjoy the view and all the sights and sounds of this Gdansk attraction!
Is St. Mary’s Church Gdansk Worth Visiting?
Absolutely! This was definitely a highlight of our trip to the city. The views are simply remarkable from the top. While the slender staircase may not be for everyone, it was so worth it to climb a piece of history.
