Lugano to Gandria Switzerland: Walking the Olive Tree Trail!

Gandria Switzerland

Gandria is a special town in Switzerland set on the scenic shores of Lake Lugano. We recently had the chance to visit Gandria via the Olive Tree Trail from Lugano city. It was one of the best afternoons of our trip, as we fell in love with the colorful maze of streets and small cafes! Here’s what to know about the Olive Tree Trail from Lugano, what to do in Gandria, and all about our experience.

How to Get to Gandria Switzerland

First off, you should know there are a few ways to get to Gandria. The absolute best in our opinion (more about this next) is walking from Lugano on the Olive Tree Trail.

However, we know that some travelers won’t have time to take the long walk around the lake. Another popular option it to take the 490 bus that runs every hour from Lugano to Gandria.

There is also a large parking area on the main road above town. We were surprised how easy it was to park here, as many towns around Lake Lugano have limited spots. With that said, we still recommend coming early or late in the afternoon during the summertime to make sure to get a spot.

Gandria is located in the Ticino region of Switzerland, right on the border with Italy. If you’re driving and planning to cross the border, be sure to have your passports with you! Even though you don’t need to show it to enter, it is technically illegal not to have it on you.

The last option is to take the ferry to Gandria. There are regular routes from Lugano center multiple times a day in the summer.

The Olive Tree Trail From Lugano

As far as we’re concerned, the best way to get from Lugano to Gandria is on the Olive Tree Trail. Also known as “Sentiero dell’olivo,” this 4.3 km pathway will take you right along the beautiful lake.

We decided to walk from the Lugano to the start of the trail, which added a little extra time. Keep this in mind if you’re planning on making the hike from Lugano old town. The first part is along the road, but there is an amazing view of Lugano city as you make your way up the first incline.

Following google maps is a good idea to get to the start of the trail. Otherwise, if you miss the cut down, you’d be walking the main road to Gandria instead.

The official hike is numbered with different stops that explain the history of the area. In addition to the olive trees, we couldn’t believe the diverse wildlife around this part of Lake Lugano. We saw bamboo, cactus, palm trees, and all types of incredible flowers!

Our favorite part of the Olive Tree Trail were all the swimming spots and viewpoints. Another thing we loved about our hike to Gandria was the cafes and restaurants along the path.

We highly recommend stopping at Società Canottieri Ceresio sports club for a swim and drink. There was also a stunning view at Elvezia al Lago hotel near the end of the trail with a restaurant over the water.

The trail was mostly flat, but there are a couple of up and down sections that were steepers at the end towards Gandria. It’s definitely smart to wear sturdy walking shoes and not flip flops.

Our Trip to Gandria Switzerland

After a good 1.5 hours on the Olive Tree Trail, we arrived hot and sweaty to Gandria. It was August in Europe after all!

Entering from the left side of the village, we headed down the winding stairs into town. We were immediately taken aback by the ancient feel of Ticino stone houses and traditional restaurants.

It’s easy to see why Gandria is considered one of the best preserved historic towns in this region of Switzerland!

Tales of Gandria were first recorded back in the 13th century. Yet, this area of the lake was likely inhabited many centuries before. It would grow into a fishing community that was only accessible by boat until a road opened from Lugano in the 1930’s.

The most noticeable thing for us was how quiet and peaceful it was, even in the peak of summer. We spent about an hour strolling through the streets, taking photos, and eventually found a dock to go swimming off of. It felt like we had our own private beach, taking turns diving into the refreshing waters of Lugano.

Quick Tips For Your Gandria Visit

Parking: The only parking is at the top of the town on the main road. Note that the actual town of Gandria is pedestrian only.

Steep Stairs: If you hiked the Olive Tree Trail, then the stairs of Gandria should be no problem. Just be aware they are very steep!

Hotels: Planning on spending the night? There are a few accommodations, but know that the options are limited in Gandria. Check out Ristorante le bucce di Gandria and Casa 1659 before your visit.

Restaurants: There are a couple of great local restaurants in Gandria such as Locanda Gandriese and Ristorante Antico. We are still craving all the traditional Italian and Swiss dishes around Lugano to this day! You won’t find a grocery store to speak of, but they have snacks and drinks on the water at La Bottega di Gandria.

Is Gandria Switzerland Worth Visiting?

Yes! We absolutely loved everything about Gandria. It’s perfect for a relaxing overnight stay on your Lake Lugano vacation. With its small size, you could see also see it in just an hour if you wanted to.

We were staying just down the road in Albogasio-Oria Italy, which is another tiny Lugano town. Gandria could be an amazing place to use as a home base for 2 nights and explore more of the area with a car.

If you’re visiting on a day trip, we highly recommend taking the Olive Tree Trail! Gandria Switzerland has such a fun combo of history and nature to enjoy.
