The Home Hotel: Our Stay at Zurich’s New Luxury Property

The Home Hotel

Looking for a fun stay on your next trip to Zurich Switzerland? The Home Hotel is truly unlike any other in the city. Upon entering, you’ll immediately feel as though you’re stepping into a perfectly designed cozy home. Everything is vibrant, with bold colors and beautiful art that ties the style together. We stayed for two nights this summer just after their grand opening, and absolutely loved it! Here’s what to know about The Home Hotel Zurich, from the best rooms to our favorite cocktails and the LouLou Restaurant.

The Home Hotel Zurich Location

One of the most important parts of planning your trip to Zurich is figuring out where to stay. For this visit, we spent two nights at The Home Hotel in the Wollishofen district. Honestly, we had never heard of this fun neighborhood before our stay!

It’s located right next to the Sihlcity shopping center, which is a massive mall filled with all kinds of stores. We would also discover some great food options in the area. However, you’ll probably just want to eat at The Home Hotel Zurich after seeing their dinner menu (more on this later!)

Your travels will surely take you to Old Town, Lake Zurich, and all around the popular riverfront area. Yet, it was refreshing to stay just outside all the hustle and bustle, while still being just a quick train ride away.

Having the Zurich Card gave us access and discounts to all kinds museums, tours, and attractions. Still, the best feature was having all our public transportation included.

From The Home Hotel, we could hop right on the train and be in Old Town in under 10 minutes. One day, we even took the train downtown and walked back through Zurich’s colorful residential neighborhoods.

Special Design of The Home Hotel

Walking into The Home Hotel feels like you’re stepping into another world! Trust us when we say this is not just another boring hotel lobby.

With this property, it’s best to take anything you’ve seen in a traditional hotel design and push it to the back of your mind.

The design captivated us right away, and perfectly encapsulated Zurich’s creative art scene. The colors are strong, but still provide a warm and cozy feeling. Additionally, the main lounge made us want to order a cocktail and hop on the couch with a good book.

Finding out that the building was restored from an old paper mill really made the space make more sense. The award-winning designers Stylt Trampoli were able to maintain its historical character, while adding more modern features to the property.

The design itself was inspired by the Dada art movement, which we found incredibly unique for our first overnight stay in Zurich. The Home Hotel is also a member of Marriott and is part of the Design Hotels collection. We have already grown to love this brand during our many years of travel, so this was also a nice surprise!

Our Room at The Home Hotel Zurich

When it comes to the rooms, they have something for every kind of traveler. The special layouts were clearly designed based on what they had to work with from the old paper mill, and they came out amazing. We saw several different room styles and each one was completely distinct.

For our stay, we chose the Superior Signature room. It came with a full bathroom, small kitchen, massive bed, and mini-fridge. Our window even overlooked the Sihl River, which made for an excellent place to spend the night after our days out in the city.

Bed

As you’ll see below, there are many different sized rooms to choose from. The cool thing is that you’re able to pick from regular or signature style, with the difference being that signature includes a small kitchen area.

  • Comfort: 25 to 28 square meters and great for couples or solo travelers.
  • Superior: 30 to 36 square meters. Perfect for a longer stay, especially with the kitchen attached!
  • Triple Room: Also, 30 to 36 square meters. Ideal for families traveling with kids.
  • Junior Suite: 41 square meter rooms with king bed. Includes a separate seating area, lounge chair, and sofa.
  • Superior Suite: Spacious 55 square meter room with a separate living room and working area. Book the Superior Signature to truly travel in style!

Cocktails at the Home Bar & Lounge

On our first night, we headed down to the bar area before dinner. This is a stunning lounge with a view of the river. It acts as the heart of the hotel and was one of our favorite places to spend time.

We saw everything from a large group of friends grabbing drinks to several people working on the computers. There were even others enjoying a cocktail with a book or magazine.

Since the name of the property is The Home Hotel, the Bar & Lounge area would definitely be considered the living room. Like everywhere else, this space was meticulously designed without an inch bring overlooked. We loved how all the different seating areas flowed together, but still had their own spaces to spread out.

One of the best ways to relax after a day of exploring is to try one (or several) of their awesome cocktails! Each one comes with its own flair, and there is truly something to fit everyone’s taste and preference.

The Home Bar & Lounge

The Home Bar and Lounge

From the Zurich Martini to the Sunset Gin & Tonic and the Frozen Black Margarita (Brigitte’s favorite), they offer no shortage of exciting drinks to try! There was even a delicious cocktail called the Pink Lady if you’d like something non-alcoholic.

With all that said, the absolute showstopper was the Bloody Sayed, which is nicknamed after the head bartender. He served us the smokey and flavorful drink himself and uncapped the top as the mist blew out.

The Home Bar & Lounge also plays host to nightly events like small concerts and comedy shows. There was even a DJ one night who threw down a set after hours!

Dinner at LouLou Restaurant

Just around the corner from the main lounge is the hotel’s LouLou Restaurant. This was definitely another highlight of our stay at the Home Hotel Zurich! The bistro has an amazing menu, which features classic French staples and a fusion of cuisine from around the world.

The talented chef behind the menu is Inbar Zuckerberg who has decades of experience in the restaurant industry. Unfortunately, she had not yet started at the restaurant when we visited just after their opening, so we will have to go back to taste her work!

Despite this, we had an absolutely delicious meal. We ordered a meat and cheese plate to start, followed by Swiss entrecôte and homemade ravioli for our main courses. These dishes paired so well with the wines from around Europe that were recommended by our waiter.

This was such a fantastic end to our day, and we finished it off with one more cocktail in the lounge. On our next visit, we’re definitely going to try the French Grill & Raw Bar as well!

Would We Stay at The Home Hotel Zurich Again?

Yes! The Home Hotel exceeded our expectations during our two nights in Zurich.

If you’ve been following our adventures for a while now, you know we’ve stayed at all kinds of luxury hotels and resorts around the world. Sometimes, in the cities, many of the hotels feel the same with a muted design. However, this was complete opposite!

The Home Hotel combined Zurich’s art scene with the historic heritage of the area, and made for such a fun stay. Every night, after being out in the city, we couldn’t wait to head to the Home Bar & Lounge for a cocktail.

The LouLou Restaurant is also so exceptional that you should 100% stop by, even if you’re not staying at the hotel.
