DJI Mini 2 Review: Is it the Best Small Drone to Travel With?

DJI Mini 2 Review

When searching for our first drone we heard a lot about the DJI Mini 2. We needed something easy and lightweight to travel with, but also that could take amazing footage! Known as the best small drone on the market, it truly seemed like the perfect fit. Now after using it for almost a year we wanted to share our experience with a DJI Mini 2 review. Hopefully, this will help answer some questions you have when shopping for your very first drone!

DJI Mini 2 Review

DJI is a leader in the industry and make everything from small drones (like the DJI Mini) all the way up to large professional drones that cost several thousand dollars. There are many other popular companies to choose from. However, if you’re buying your first drone and can afford a DJI it’s definitely a great place to start.

Best Things about the DJI Mini 2 Drone

The Price

The first thing we love about the DJI Mini 2 is the price. At $449.00 for the basic drone and $599.00 for the combo package, it’s one of the cheapest on the market. Even with its small size, the quality of the build, photos, and videos it takes are top-notch. The price is also very reasonable when you consider how expensive other models can get. Professional drone users pay anywhere from $3,000 to $10,000!

The DJI Mini 2 Size

The compact size of the DJI Mini 2 is another thing we appreciate about it. As full-time travelers, we needed something we could easily fit in our bags. Really the entire case it comes in can easily go with you anywhere!

The DJI Mini 2 drone is also super lightweight. This is important because we always have other equipment with us and can’t afford to add more weight to our carry-on bags.

Easy to Use

Having never flown a drone before we were pleasantly surprised with the DJI Mini 2. Now that’s not to say it didn’t take some practice.

In fact, we are still learning new things every day. Yet, we found it remarkably simple to use than we thought. Even my 91-year-old grandpa has taken a turn flying it!

DJI Mini 2 App

One thing that helped us figure out how to use the DJI Mini 2 drone was the iPhone app. It has many tutorial videos in it and also includes many useful features.

The one that is most important will tell you where NOT to fly. Most of the time it will be that you are too close to an airport. This is a big rule as you can’t fly a drone anywhere that has the possibility to interfere with flight traffic.

You can look at the map even when you aren’t flying the drone to see the different restricted areas near you.

Entry Level Drone

The DJI Mini is an entry-level drone which makes it an awesome tool for beginners. If you have never flown or used a drone this is a good place to start.

Already have some skills but still looking for a compact-size drone? Consider the DJI Air 2S or DJI Mini 3 Pro! You can also check out our article on the separate Ruko model below.

Cons of DJI Mini 2

There were a few things we don’t like that we need to mention in this DJI Mini 2 review. Some of these apply to all drones while some are more specific to our model. Either way, we figured we should mention them so you know what you’re getting.

Low Battery Life

The DJI Mini 2 does not have very long battery life. The longest we will fly it at one time is 25 minutes but we’d usually bring it back well before that. The last thing you want is your drone to die mid-air!

This may sound like a lot of time but once it’s in the air and you’re getting the correct shots it goes quick. With that said, we always carried around an extra battery pack with us. It’s easy to switch them out and get your DJI Mini 2 back flying. However, we wish the battery would last a bit longer.

DJI Mini 2

Easily Breakable

Something we are always worried about when flying or even carrying our drone around is breaking it. Particularly when it comes to the propellers which look like they could fall apart at any moment!

Even the best small drone has issues. Be sure to land it on a completely flat surface. We’ve seen people break their drones right in front of us attempting risky landings and take-offs.

Best Small Drone

Camera and Video Quality

Depending on what you plan to use your drone for this can be an important factor in making the right purchase. The DJI Mini 2 drone is the smallest and one of the lowest quality on the market.

Still, that doesn’t at all mean that it’s a bad product! If you plan to get this drone for personal and not professional use you may not even notice. The camera shoots in RAW and has 4k video capability which is amazing considering its compact size.

However, know that there are better drones available if you’re willing to spend the money. That’s why this is such a good drone to buy for beginners!

DJI Mini 2 Review Final Thoughts

We hope this DJI MINI 2 review helped you in your search for buying a drone! For us, it was an amazing tool to learn how to fly a drone. Is it the best small drone on the market? Maybe not completely… But definitely for beginners!

If you’re looking to get your feet wet and not spend too much money don’t hesitate to buy the DJI Mini 2. We absolutely loved it and it’s great to take with you on your travels.
