How to Find the Best Milos Beaches: Everything to Know First!

Milos Beaches

Known for its crystal clear water, unique swimming spots, and beautiful Milos beaches, this island in Greece is truly a paradise. Still, one thing had our brains in a pretzel… I mean how can you possibly cover the best of Milos when there are over 75 amazing beaches to discover?? Hopefully, this Milos beach guide can help you to understand the island and find your own favorite paradise to relax and swim!

So Many Milos Beaches!

So what are the best beaches in Milos that you can’t miss? Well, that’s completely up to your travel style. Milos is a massive island and much of it remains undeveloped.

There are certainly Milos beaches that are more well-known and accessible. However, some of the most beautiful will require some adventure to get to! You’ll need to take a boat, 4×4 vehicle, or even hike to reach these special places.

Honestly, you could spend weeks on Milos and still probably not hit all the beaches that this island has to offer. With that said, let’s dive right in!

Tips for Exploring the Milos Beaches

Milos Beach Snacks: There are small mini-markets all over the island where you can buy food for the Milos beaches. Also, we found a large supermarket just outside of Adamas town that you can get to with a vehicle. We picked up some picnic stuff and car snacks to have while we explored Milos as well as plenty of water.

Snorkels: The water in Greece is some of the clearest in the world. Make sure to bring some snorkels on your trip to use at the best beaches in Milos. You won’t regret it!

Water Shoes: If you’ve never traveled to Greece it’s important to know that not all the beaches have nice soft sand. Actually, depending on which island you’re on the majority of them could be rocky. Water shoes are great to have especially on an island like Milos.

Natural Beaches: There are several beaches in Milos that are popular for travelers who like to be completely in the nude while they enjoy the Greek sun. We are just mentioning it in case you want to visit these particular beaches or choose to head to a different one.

Shade: A massive word of warning here! Milos is a very rocky and dry island. This means there is very little shade and protection from the sweltering afternoon sun. The sun in Greece is very strong in general so pack everything you need like sunblock, hats, and so on.

Best Milos Beach Towns

So where should you base yourself for Milos beach hopping? You’ll be happy to know there are plenty of charming apartments and fun hotels scattered around the island! If you want to be in more of a town area, Adamas and Pollonia are the two main coastal towns to stay in Milos. For beach lovers it might be good to base yourself in one of these two places.

Milos Beach Hopping From Adamas

Adamas is the hub and ferry port of Milos. This is where you’ll come in by boat from other islands and there are several nice beaches within walking distance.

As it’s the biggest town on the island, you can easily rent a vehicle from here to hit all the best beaches in Milos. Adamas is also where many of the boat tours leave from which we talk about soon!

How to Get to the Best Beaches in Milos

As we mentioned, Milos is a big island and some of the best beaches are not easy to reach. Luckily, there are three exciting and different ways to go about getting to them!

Milos Boat Tour

The first in our opinion is a must when visiting Milos. From the port of Adamas, there are many unique boat tours to enjoy. They range from full-day excursions with lunch and drinks to private charters to the famous Kleftiko caves.

Renting a vehicle is great but there are still some Milos beaches only accessible by boat. Plus then you can have fun diving off the ship and swimming in some of the clearest water you’ve ever seen!

Rent a Car on Milos

Boat tours are so much fun but we also recommend renting a vehicle to get around. Unlike public transportation on other popular Greek islands, there is a very limited bus system in Milos. The bus may be okay for getting between the popular villages but not if you’re trying to Milos beach hop!

From the main town of Adamas, you can rent scooters, ATV’s, cars, and even a dune buggy! We rented a car to get to the Milos Greece beaches which you can read more about here. Even with a few wrong twists and turns, we had an epic time exploring. Still, there are clear advantages and disadvantages to each type of vehicle.

As soon as you know your dates on the island we highly recommend you book a car in advance for the best deal. Know that there is a limited amount of cars in the Greek Islands that sell out in the summer season!

ATV to the Milos Beaches

If you have experience using an ATV this is definitely the way to get to the best beaches in Milos. Having a car was fine but we were pretty sketched out going down some of the bumpy dirt roads.

Having a 4×4 vehicle will help get you to some places that a car just can’t. Also, some of the mountain villages have narrow roads that barely fit a car!

While it is a great option, know that the ATV’s sell out fast in the summer months even faster than cars. We visited in early May (which is considered off-season) and still weren’t able to get one without calling ahead.

Insurance Coverage For the Milos Beaches

When we picked up our rental car we were given a map that showed where NOT TO DRIVE on Milos. We knew the island was gigantic but we were surprised to find out that the roads aren’t suitable for cars on almost half of it.

These are no-go areas where rental insurance is voided if you travel there. Just be aware of these parts so you don’t make a very expensive mistake!

Most Iconic Milos Beaches

Kleftiko Caves

The one-of-a-kind caves and rock formations have become famous in recent years and are one of the things that bring so many people to Milos. However, what many people don’t realize is that it’s actually not actually a beach!

While it is an incredible place to swim, you can only get to Kleftiko by boat. Don’t worry though! We wrote a full guide about Kleftiko and why you can’t miss it while visiting Milos below.

Sarakiniko Beach

Sarakiniko is also one of the Milos beaches that deserves to be highlighted. Also known as “Moon Beach” with its out-of-this-world appearance, every beach lover will enjoy their experience swimming here. You can lay out on the huge white rocks or even go cliff jumping!

While all the beaches in Milos are beautiful in their own way, this is definitely one of the most unique. Due to that, it does get super crowded in the summer months! We recommend making it your first stop of the day so you can see this Milos beach in all its glory.

One Day Milos Beach Hopping Itinerary

With their being over 75 Milos beaches it would take a very long time to see them all. Here are a few of our favorites from our one-day adventure with a car! They’re in the order we did leaving from the port town of Adamas. Nevertheless, you can easily take your own route to see as many as possible.

Klima Beach: This old fishing port features colorful houses along the ocean. The village is one of the oldest on Milos dating back over 3,000 years! These days the properties are rented out to travelers who enjoy swimming off the rocky pier and at the small beach.

→ Before or after your next Milos beach you can visit the capital of Plaka and hike up to the Venetian castle ruins! In the area, you can also explore the ancient catacombs of Milos and 3rd Century B.C. Roman Theatre.

Plathiena: From the top of the Plaka castle you can see cars and ATV’s zooming towards Plathiena beach. This is a great sandy beach to chill out and enjoy the day!

Best Milos Beaches

Firopotamos Beach: With a stunning view from above, this Milos beach is hands down one of the most charming on the island. It’s set in a small little cove that remains mostly protected from the elements.

→ Between beaches stop at Mandrakia to take photos at the pretty little harbor. You can also grab a seafood lunch at one of the popular restaurants called Medousa.

Moon Beach: Visit as soon as you get out for the day and before it gets too crowded. The amazing white rocks here were actually formed from the ash of a volcanic explosion!

Papafragas Caves: This super unique swimming spot is one you might miss if you aren’t looking for it. Explore the rock formations and fun sea caves.

Pollonia: As we mentioned, Pollonia is the second most popular area to stay on the island. It’s also home to a very scenic beach. After a long day of driving, we found some shade under a small tree and took refreshing dips in the ocean!

Ready For the Best Beaches in Milos??

The above itinerary is more than enough to fill a day of Milos beach hopping. We hope you use this as a loose guide while finding your own favorite Milos Greece beaches! One full day of ours was spent on a boat tour while we took another to see Milos with a car.

If you have a second day with a vehicle we recommend heading to the southern part of the island at Paralia Paleochori. From there you can see more amazing beaches in Milos! Just be prepared for very bumpy and unpaved roads in the south.
