Chiang Mai is one of the most amazing places to visit in Thailand! While you can find a wide range of accommodations to fit any travel style, many of the best properties are the charming Chiang Mai Boutique hotels. You’ll also find that there are plenty of different prices for every budget. Here are some tips for planning your holiday and our absolute favorite Chiang Mai Boutique hotel options.
What Makes Chiang Mai So Popular?
Chiang Mai has gained international recognition over the years as one of the premier cities in Thailand. The hundreds of temples, fun weekend night markets, and amazing street food are just some of the things that make it special.
We’ve made many visits ourselves and it’s somewhere we always try to include in our Thailand itineraries. It’s a great stop for a couple of days, but you could easily spend a week or two here as well!
As you’ll see, there are so many awesome places to stay around the city. Some of the very best accommodations are Chiang Mai boutique hotels right in the center of all the action.

How to Get to Chiang Mai Thailand
Chiang Mai is the largest city in Northern Thailand and a major hub for visitors heading to the region. There are many ways to get here, but ultimately the flight or overnight train are the best options.
Flight: It’s very simple to get to Chiang Mai Thailand from anywhere in Southeast Asia. International flights run from many of the large cities and domestic flights go daily from Bangkok. Use Skyscanner and search by month view to find the cheapest days to travel!
You can even catch a plane from some of the larger islands like Phuket and Koh Samui to Chiang Mai International Airport. Just keep in mind you might have to transfer through the capital city first.
Train: If you’re looking for a unique way to get to Chiang Mai hop on the overnight train from Bangkok! We recommend booking the first-class sleeper cabin if possible as it’s more comfortable for the 12+ hour journey.
Bus: There are plenty of bus routes that go through Chiang Mai from all over Thailand (you can book one here). This is not our favorite way to get to the city, but it may be appealing if you’re on a budget.
Finding the Best Chiang Mai Boutique Hotels
Choosing the right accommodation can make or break your holiday. Obviously, this can depend on how much you’re willing to spend and what your personal travel style is. However, know that hotels are very affordable, even in the cities of Thailand.
In Chiang Mai there aren’t many massive resorts like you’ll find in the islands in popular coastal areas. Instead, there are many small Boutique Chiang Mai hotels to pick from.
Be sure to book as far in advance in possible to ensure you get the best rate. This is especially important during the peak travel months and vacation times. On the hottest days between March and May it’s also a good idea to have a place with an outdoor swimming pool.
The good news is Chiang Mai can be a great place to visit during the off-season months. This means when it’s not as nice during the rainy season on the islands, this northern city can be an incredible spot to be!
