Fuerteventura Rental Car Tips
There are a few things you should know before renting a car in Fuerteventura. Here are a few essentials to check off prior to making your booking. After that, you can get to exploring this amazing island!
Automatics are Limited: Can’t drive a manual? Then you might want to verify automatic cars are available. Typically they will have them at the airport or bigger branches, but not always during the busy season. Also, they are much cheaper to rent from the larger locations.
Check Parking at Your Hotel: It’s always good to make sure your hotel has parking! It can really increase your costs if you have to pay for overnight parking on Fuerteventura.
Fuerteventura Car Rental Insurance: For us, we used a credit card to cover our rental car in Fuerteventura. Even if you have this same perk on your own card you may want to opt for coverage through the company you rent from. Whatever you do, be covered as the roads can get a little crazy on the island!
Confirm Your booking: Be sure to confirm your booking before you arrive! The worst thing to do is show up to a place ready for your adventure and they don’t have a car for you.
10 Reasons to Get a Rental Car in Fuerteventura Spain
1. Renting a Car in Fuerteventura When You Land
Not only is the airport the easiest place to rent a car in Fuerteventura, but typically you’ll find they have the best prices on the island! Unless you’re heading for a relaxing beach vacation where you won’t need a car we highly recommend picking one up at the airport when you touch down.
The prices are almost always much lower than getting it from a local branch in town. Also, if you search for a weekly rate you may be able to get a long-term discount rather than just renting for a couple of days.
We used DiscoverCars to compare the different companies at the airport and car prices. In the end, we paid around $160 USD for one week. It may be worth it to book your car in advance because it might be more expensive the closer you get to your dates.
2. Fuerteventura is Massive
One thing we should point out is that Fuerteventura is a big island! Most people know Tenerife is the largest of the Canary Islands, but Fuerteventura is actually #2 in size.
After spending some time on Gran Canaria we definitely thought it had to be the 2nd biggest. So when we found out this island was even more humongous getting a car rental in Fuerteventura was a no-brainer!
We were so impressed by the diverse landscapes of this island! As you’ll see in this article, there are endless towns, attractions, and best of all… BEACHES to explore.
3. Beach Hop in Your Rental Car in Fuerteventura
Speaking of beaches… Fuerteventura is known for having the most beautiful in all of the Canary Islands. The combo of soft white sand and crystal clear waters is seriously the stuff out of your wildest dreams. Fuerteventura is absolute paradise!
So how do you get around to all of the beaches? Well, that’s where your Fuerteventura car rental will come into play. We loved how easily you can jump from beach to beach in a car. That means whether you’re in the East or exploring the wild West Coast, you can plan for a whole day of island fun.

4. Enjoy the Best Fuerteventura Restaurants
Another great reason to rent a car in Fuerteventura is the food! You will find delicious meals in the main towns of Corralejo and Morro Jable. However, we discovered that much of the best food was at local tavernas inland from the ocean.
It’s hard to pinpoint one specific restaurant because they were all so good! While just driving around through the mountains of Fuerteventura we stopped in for plates of the day, fresh seafood, tapas, and more! Honestly, there was no way we would’ve come across these places without our car rental in Fuerteventura.
5. Visit the North & South
As we mentioned before, Fuerteventura is huge! There are so many different parts of this island to stay in and enjoy. For this reason, we recommend splitting your time up along the different coasts if possible. We spent 4 days in the North and 3 days in the South during our last trip.
It was so convenient to have a rental car in Fuerteventura to get between these different regions. Once there we still needed a car to get around to the beaches and attractions in the area. It really worked out perfectly!
6. Fuerteventura Natural Pools
Say what?? Yes!! In addition to its out-of-this-world beaches, Fuerteventura also has unique natural pools to swim in. The only problem is some of them are difficult to get to… Without a car that is!
Krabbenfelsen and Aguas Verdes are hands down two of the most unique and beautiful places we have swum in the world. These natural pools were worth having a car to see just on their own.

7. Explore the Wild West Coast
While we’re on the topic, the west coast is one of the more rugged parts of Fuerteventura. Yet, its really a place you don’t want to miss! There are far fewer accommodations on this side of the island which is why you’ll need to rent a car in Fuerteventura to experience it. And trust us, when you get to Aguas Verdes and see the over 6km of natural pools you’ll be glad you did!

8. Avoid Public Transportation
Another excellent reason for renting a car in Fuerteventura is that you won’t need to take taxis or the bus! While there are limited bus routes that run between the popular beach towns, it’s tough to recommend that as a way to get around.
I mean who wants to be waiting at a bus stop in the hot afternoon sun when they could be onto the next beautiful beach? Public transportation may be easier on Tenerife or Gran Canaria, but renting a car in Fuerteventura is the way to go!
9. Freedom to Roam with a Car Rental in Fuerteventura
The best part about having a rental car in Fuerteventura is that you can make your own schedule! This way you won’t have to be tied down to any tour or bus times. Not feeling one beach or town? No problem, move on!
This is something that’s so important to us when in the Canary Islands. With many travelers visiting multiple islands on their trip, there is no time to waste! In addition to having freedom, it will also allow you to dial in the perfect itinerary for your trip.
10. Ferry to Lanzarote
Okay we have one last thing you should know before you take off to Fuerteventura! There is another amazing island just next door called Lanzarote. With Lanzarote being just 30 minutes by ferry, it is so worth visiting for a couple of nights or even on a day trip.
Take your rental car on the boat, cruise around Lanzarote, and then get back to Fuerteventura on the same day. Just check to make sure it’s ok first with your Fuerteventura rental car company! Unfortunately, some do not allow you to go between the islands.
